Chapter 16
“Holy shit!” Brent exclaimed as Clark Simmons piloted the red Ferrari toward the hangars. “Is that a B-52? It’s enormous!”
The colonel grinned at the former construction worker. “Yup, that’s a B-52. That’s why we’re here. They made an emergency landing here after some of the crew members got sick and then never made it back to Barksdale Air Force Base.”
“I didn’t even know any were left,” Brent told him. “I thought they retired these years ago.”
“Well, there may not be many left, actually. In fact, this one might be it,” Simmons replied. “From what I understand, Barksdale and Minot both got crushed by nukes, and those were the only two places left that still had active B-52 squadrons.” He gazed up at the giant aircraft and the eight enormous engines hanging down from the wings, “This could be the last flying B-52 in the world.”
Brent took in the fully intact runways and hangars all around them before he asked, “So how did this place survive?”
That question seemed to provoke mirth from the military man. He laughed as he eased the Ferrari close to one of the hangars and stopped. Simmons said, “Welcome to Air Mobility Command, home of cargo jets, bureaucracy, and not much else. The Russians probably didn’t strike here because they don’t have any bombers stationed here. That,” he said as he indicated the B-52, “Is the extent of the threat. One BUFF to rule them all.”
“Wait, what’s a BUFF? I thought this was a Superfortress or something,” Brent said in confusion.
“The BUFF is one of the Infantryman’s best friends,” Simmons chuckled. “It stands for Big, Ugly, Fat, Fucker, and it can destroy a battlefield like nothing else can.” He pushed the door open to get out of the car as he said, “Oh, and it’s a Stratofortress. The Superfortress was the B-29.”
Simmons stretched and groaned quietly as he stood. The drive from the barracks where they were staying had only taken a couple of minutes, but sleeping on the crappy beds hadn’t done his back or joints any favors. “We’re going to meet with the folks in charge today and convince them that Snead was the one behind the virus.” He pointed up at the huge bomber. “And then they’re going to bomb the fuck out of him with that.”
Brent’s reason for accompanying the former colonel suddenly became clear. He was one of only five living people who had seen the laptop containing preliminary information on the virus testing at North Georgia Technical College from months before the deadly vaccine was introduced. Sheila had been killed in the attack on the mountain and Abby had committed suicide before the attacks. Only Brent, Daniel, Marcy, Jensen, and Jessica remained. “I can try to convince them, but do they even know where he is?”
“Oh yes, yes they do,” Simmons answered. “The man either thinks nobody will ever find out what he’s done, has the biggest balls in history, or he thinks the rest of the country is as badly off as Georgia.
